the edward gains experience were always a band that was going to fall apart... before the first note had even been played on any given night, i had filled myself to the brim with whatever was going, and i was normally barely able to remember the set list... on this particular night at the kings arms tavern in auckland on the 2th of april way the heck back in 2001, my right hand man/guitar virtuoso donald ferns was the only one, other than myself, who knew the loose structure of the songs... the wondrously demented keyboards were played by my longtime friend dr. krishna pillai and the drums were filled out by the powerhouse that is brent bidlake... basically it was all about "winging it" and seeing where these simple songs could go... most veer off on some sort of psychedelic tangent, but strangely enough, there is a surprising amount of "togetherness"... maybe more like "togethermess!!!"... i think there was no more than 30 people there that night and it felt like the gig of my life... we played some pretty swingin' versions of songs like 'i can do what nobody else can do' and 'methusela', some pretty freaked out versions of 'weird girlfriend' and 'shit magnet' and a black sabbath inspired version of 'amsterdam' aswell as a couple of daniel johnston covers, 'i did acid with caroline' and 'true love will find you in the end', which were especially for that very special person who gave me that very special tape that i still treasure to this day... i left that night thinking that i could die happy because i was in the greatest band that ever was... the next morning i awoke with a terrible f@#king hangover, a couple of really bad photos (see below!!!) taken by a really drunk friend and this recording from dr. krishna's mini disc... the band lasted only a few more shows before donald returned to dunedin to start onanon with my best friend, glen ross and for me it was the start of the demi whores... but this is a live testament to a band that i am immensely proud to have been part of, a band that was never meant to become anything, and a band that was never meant to last... i wish you could have been there... but if you were not there, heres the free download...
